regional walkoff

After Sussex Hamilton walked two to load the bases with two outs of a tie game in the bottom of the 7th inning, Chris Trafton stepped up.

The junior right fielder sent a line drive single into right field, scoring Keith Koehn with the winning run in Kettle Moraine’s 4-3 victory at Wales Community Park.

With the regional championship victory, the Lasers advance to Monday’s sectional semifinal against Brookfield East at Brookfield Central High School at 10 a.m.

Hamilton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, scoring a run on a dropped fly ball with two outs and a two-out RBI single.

Kettle Moraine took the lead in the third inning, first getting on the board on a two-out RBI single by junior third baseman Matt Melbye. After an infield single by junior catcher Robbie Dombrowski, senior center fielder Dom Nabak hit a rocket off the center field fence to score two and put KM up 3-2.

Hamilton left fielder Trent Metzger tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, tagging a long home run to left field. The home run was the only earned run allowed by senior right-hander Keith Koehn in six innings of work.

After junior left-hander Austin Wolf worked a scoreless seventh inning, Koehn was hit by a pitch to start the seventh. Sacrificed to second by junior left fielder Jake Pohlman, Koehn moved up to third on Melbye’s groundout.

After falling behind 2-0 to Dombrowski, Hamilton elected to walk him and Nabak to get to Trafton. Jumping on the first pitch, Trafton hit a line drive over the second baseman’s head for the game-winner.

Kettle Moraine won the regional championship for the fourth straight season, improving to 23-5 in 2013.
